What to Wear for a Golden-Hour Family Session in Dallas

The number one question I get before a session is "what should we wear?", so let's make it easy. The goal isn't to match perfectly. It's to look like the warmest version of your everyday selves, in tones that glow in golden-hour light.

Start with a palette, not an outfit

Pick two or three soft, warm colors and build around them, think cream, oatmeal, sage, dusty blue, terracotta, and warm neutrals. These tones catch the late-day sun instead of fighting it. Then let everyone pull from that palette rather than wearing the exact same thing. Coordinated beats matchy every time.

Add texture and layers

Flowy dresses, linen, knit cardigans, and rolled sleeves photograph with depth and movement, especially when there's a breeze. A long dress with a little flow is almost always a win for moms.

A few gentle "skip" items

  • Large logos, bright neon, and busy patterns (they pull the eye away from faces)
  • Brand-new shoes nobody has broken in
  • All-white or all-black head to toe, a little contrast reads better

Don't overthink the kids

Comfortable kids = real smiles. Dress them in something soft they can move in, bring a snack, and let the rest happen. Being relaxed with little ones is kind of my specialty.
